Nationalism

  • Nationalism is the ideology of pride in one’s country, ethnicity, language and origin.
  • It often pushed similar ethnic groups closer together but caused rivalries between nations and sometimes within them.
  • For example Jews and Romanis which were minorities living in Europe were often excluded.
  • Another example being minority groups that were part of large empires, who wanted their own nation. Such as Poland who wanted to separate from the Russian Empire.
  • Nationalism also led to rivalries between great European powers, making it one of the causes for the Great War.
