Tone

• Tone is a way of expressing attitude through speech or text.
• Tones can be positive or negative.
• Tone is generally much more evident in speech, but can also be understood easily in text with the aid of context and use of vocabulary.
  
• Tone can be: serious, humorous, witty, ironic, patriotic, sentimental, defensive, angry, moralizing, compassionate, pessimistic, cynical, nostalgic, satirical, critical, horrified, rejoicing, bitter, excited, enthusiastic, triumphant etc.
  

Didactic Tone

• Intended to teach, particularly in having moral instruction as an ulterior motive.
• Didactic tone should be remembered separately from other types of tone due to its significance in writing.
• The didactic tone affects the confidence of the author, as it makes them seem intelligent and superior to the reader.
• Vital for guiding, moralizing and instructing through a text or speech.
