Litotes

  • A technique by which the poet understates in order to achieve effect.
  • Practically the opposite of a hyperbole.
  • An example is seen in Sterling Brown’s poem about the murder of an African American at the hands of police:
    “And all we can say for the Negro is
    It was unfortunate.”
  • The flippancy of the judgement increases the sense of injustice.
