Enjambment

  • When one line ends without a pause and continues into the next line for its meaning.
  • This is also called a run-on line.
  • In Mathew Arnold’s “Dover Beach”, for example, it is used to evoke the suddenness with which the light appears and disappears.
    “On the French coast, the light
    Gleams, and is gone"
