What (literary) influences shaped her writing? (think motivation)
- Her work appears to be influenced not only by her own personal experiences and the works of others, but also from her observations of what is occurring around her.
- She mentions always being attuned to her environment, as if she were a "spy".
- She describes her process as observing her surroundings and ushering inspiration by doing so.
- As a childhood she had been very interested in many authors and their works, their writing likely being an influence for her own work.
What aspects of her identity do you find most compelling or relatable?
- Her work is not only of her own personal experiences, but based on inspiration from what she has observed.
- Some works come not from concentrated thought, but just out of the blue, which is something I find relatable for my own workflow.
- She also prefers when works come to her, and aren't forced into specific topics or ideas. I relate to how it feels unnatural to work not out of your own passion, but for someone else.
What themes can be found in her oeuvre?
- Her works tend to focus on her own life experiences, but is also focused on retelling myths and producing her own parodies and alternate versions of famous mythology.
- Much of her work is likely inspired by what she has seen and been through in her life and the other works she has been through.
How have her experiences and background influenced her perspective AND how does her work encourage her audience to transform their own perspectives?
- Her family situation led her to withdraw and started her obsession with reading and eventually poetry.
- This love for reading was what influenced her to write her own works. She states how her teachers helped her passion flourish and develop.
How does Carol Ann Duffy's work relate to Identity?
- Carol's work, while inspired greatly by her own background, her identity does not influence her work as much, unless it is directly autobigoraphical.
- How much of an author's identity influences their work is their own choice, and not something set in stone.
